The Purpose of Life

In the interview by Paul Bradshaw with Rick Warren, Rick said:  People ask me, What is the purpose of life? And I respond: In a nutshell, life is preparation for eternity. We were made to last forever, and God wants us to be with Him in Heaven.

One day my heart is going to stop, and that will be the end of my body-- but not the end of me.

I may live 60 to 100 years on earth ..More

Lessons From An Old Friend
This past week when I was in Angola for business I decided to visit on old friend.  Dave and I grew up together on weekends during the summer when my family would go to our lake cottage on Crooked Lake.  Dave lived there year round and although the miles separated us during the winter months, when Memorial Day came around, it was like we were never apart.

Dave was a terrific friend and an amazing artist.  You knew that when college was over, the sky was the limit for him.  He was also one of those people who never rested and lived life to the fullest.  Growing up we played baseball and would swim all day long if our parents let us.  As we got older, we’d water ski all day and then Dave would say, “I’ll go home and change and pick you up in 30 minutes.”   He was an unbelievable friend, and until this week, I hadn’t fully realized how much I have missed having him around.

You see, Dave passed away when he was 24 and I was living in Fort Wayne after finishing college.  I’ll never forget how the cancer tried to take the life out of him, but he just wouldn’t have it.  He’d come visit me after his chemo treatments and say, “I can’t wait until these things are over so I can get back to partying again”.  He had a strong belief that the cancer was only a temporary setback.

As I stood at his grave, I was surprised to find myself a little emotional, because it has been over 25 years since his death.  But I was thinking about all his talents and what he would be doing with them today.  What influence would he be having in his world?  Then, I started thinking what positive impact am I having in my world today?

This week, think about what affect you are having on the people around you; and especially your family.  I realized more than ever that it is only through the grace of God that I have gotten to live a longer life than my friend Dave.  I want to make sure I live it to its’ fullest like Dave did and to remember to have an eternal perspective in all I do.   Until next week … Walk in Love.

Lord, thank you for the time You have given me on this earth and all the things I have been privileged to enjoy.  I’m especially grateful for my family and the relationships I have developed through the years.  You have blessed me beyond my wildest dreams and I want to continue to grow in those areas.  Help me to be supportive, caring and loving in all my relationships and to emulate You in all I do.  In Jesus name.

Love is this divine ingredient. It alone describes what can be our perfect relationship to our Heavenly Father and our family and neighbors, and the means by which we accomplish His work.   David B. Haight

II Cor. 3:5  It is not that we think we can do anything of lasting value by ourselves.  Our only power and success come from God.

Did this story speak to you? Is God a part of your life? If God's not a part of your life, or you're not sure He is, you can make sure right now. We believe that God sent his son Jesus Christ to come to earth to live as a man. We believe that everyone has sinned and no one is perfect. We believe Jesus willingly went to the cross to die for all of us to forgive our sins.

We believe that the way to heaven is not through being a good person or through doing good deeds, but a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. You can have that today by praying this simple prayer: God, I've messed up and have sinned against you. Please forgive me. I need you in my life. I believe that Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment of my sins and that you forgive me of all of my sins because of what Jesus did. Lord, I ask now that you fill me with your spirit and help me to live a life for you. Amen.
